The composer, Claude Debussy, called it "three symphonic sketches." He chose this name to avoid calling it a standard symphony. This work is very important to the history of music. It shows ideas like Impressionism and Symbolism. Many people also see the influence of Japonism, which is art inspired by Japan.

Today, it is one of his most loved orchestral works.

Debussy used many instruments to create the sounds of the ocean. The orchestra includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons. It also has French horns, trumpets, trombones, and a tuba. To make the water sounds, he used percussion like timpani, bass drums, cymbals, and triangles. He even used a tam tam and a glockenspiel. Two harps help add to the texture. The music has three parts, or movements. The outer movements are powerful. The middle movement is lighter and faster, acting as a scherzo. Some musical patterns even sound like the pitter-patter of falling water droplets.

Debussy began working on this piece in August 1903. He did not live by the ocean while he wrote it. Instead, he found inspiration in paintings and books. He liked looking at seascapes in art. He finished the work on March 5, 1905. Later that year, he went to the English Channel coast. He stayed at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne to correct the proofs. He described the sea there as having "utterly British correctness."

The first performance was in Paris in October 1905. At first, the audience and critics did not like it. One critic said he could not "smell the sea" in the music. Another thought the music was too small, like water in a saucer. The piece traveled to the United States in 1907. It was performed in Britain in 1908. Debussy conducted a performance in London that year. This concert was a big success. It was not until a second Paris performance in 1908 that the work truly became a hit.

La mer has become a classic that orchestras play all the time. The first audio recording was made in 1928. Since then, many famous conductors have recorded it. The New York Philharmonic has played it 135 times since 1917. Some people compare the music to the paintings of Claude Monet. Others see the influence of the Japanese artist Hokusai. This is shown by the famous "Great Wave" print on the score cover. It remains a masterpiece that connects art, literature, and sound.
