Most aloe plants have a specific shape. They grow thick, fleshy leaves in a circle called a rosette. Some plants have stems that hold these leaves up. Other varieties have no stem and grow right at ground level. Some aloes from South Africa can even grow like trees.

Their flowers are often tubular shapes. These flowers can be yellow, orange, pink, or red. They grow in large, hanging clusters at the top of the plant.

Humans have used aloe for a very long time. The name comes from the Arabic word al'uluh. This means a "bitter and shiny substance."

Ancient Greeks and Romans used Aloe vera to treat wounds. In the Middle Ages, people used the yellow liquid from the leaves. This liquid was often used as a purgative. Today, about 75% of aloe species are used for medicine locally. Aloe vera is the most famous species used for this.

There are many specific types of aloe to know. Aloe vera is often called "true aloe." It is used for many medicines and skin products. Other species like Aloe ferox are also harvested from the wild. Some plants, like Aloe variegata, were even planted on graves. People believed this helped ensure eternal life. Scientists have also studied how to group them. In 2014, researchers named six different groups within the genus. These include Aloidendron, Kumara, Aloiampelos, Aloe, Aristaloe, and Gonialoe.

Aloe is linked to many things in our daily lives. You might find aloe in special soaps or skin care products. Some species are even used as natural flavoring. For example, Aloe socotrina is said to be used in yellow Chartreuse. In the United States, some species are listed as natural flavorings. Even the color of the plant can change. They can be bright green, grey, or even have stripes.
