Most of the bones come from the Morrison Formation in North America. A huge amount of fossils was found at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in Utah. This site has bones from at least 73 different dinosaurs. Because of these many finds, Allosaurus is the state fossil of Utah.

In 1991, a team found a nearly complete skeleton named "Big Al" in Wyoming. This specimen was a subadult, meaning it was not yet fully grown.

Finding Allosaurus fossils in other places helps us understand the ancient world.

Scientists have found Allosaurus remains in Portugal as well. One species found there was named Allosaurus europaeus. Finding the same type of dinosaur in North America and Europe is very important. It suggests that these animals could move between the two continents.

This might have happened before the Atlantic Ocean opened up to separate the lands.

Discovery of the Allosaurus began during the Bone Wars. This was a famous feud between paleontologists Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. Their competition led to many fossil finds in the Western United States. In 1869, Ferdinand V. Hayden found a tail vertebra in Colorado. Locals thought it was a petrified horse hoof.

Joseph Leidy later identified it and called it Antrodemus. In 1877, Marsh described the first remains of Allosaurus. He named it after the Greek words for "different" and "lizard." He chose this because the vertebrae seemed uniquely lightweight.

One of the most important sites is the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in Utah. Between 1960 and 1965, nearly 40 institutions worked there. They recovered thousands of bones from the site. The quarry contains remains from at least 73 individual dinosaurs. At least 46 of those were Allosaurus fragilis. This massive amount of evidence makes it one of the best-known theropods. Because of these finds, Allosaurus is the state fossil of Utah.

Other famous specimens have provided incredible detail. In 1991, a team found "Big Al" in Wyoming.

This specimen was 95% complete. It was a subadult, meaning it was only 87% grown. It measured about 8.5 meters in length.

Another important find was a specimen at Dinosaur National Monument. This was collected by Earl Douglass between 1913 and 1915. These diverse finds help scientists understand how the animals grew and lived.

Allosaurus is also found in Europe, specifically in Portugal.

Fossils have been found in the Lourinhã, Bombarral, and Alcobaça formations. In 1999, a partial skeleton was found near the village of Andrés. This was the first Allosaurus found outside North America. It was assigned to Allosaurus fragilis. Some scientists also named a new species, Allosaurus europaeus, based on fossils from the Vale Frades beach. This discovery suggests that animals could move between North America and Europe. This exchange likely happened before the Atlantic Ocean opened up to separate the continents.
