These vehicles can go places where most cars might get stuck. They use low-pressure tires to help them roll over rough land easily. To drive one, you straddle a seat just like you would on a motorcycle. You use handlebars to steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go. Some people call them quad bikes or four-wheelers depending on where they live. In Australia and parts of Canada, many people use the name four-wheeler.

There are different ways these machines work and move. Most ATVs are made for just one person to ride. However, some special models called tandem ATVs allow a driver and one passenger.

Other vehicles have seats placed side-by-side instead of one behind the other. These are called utility terrain vehicles, or UTVs, to show they are different.

While they look different, both types often use similar parts to power their wheels. The extra wheels on a quad provide more stability when moving at slow speeds.

People have been building motorized four-wheelers for a very long time. In 1893, a company called Royal Enfield built the first powered four-wheeler.

That early machine used many parts from bicycles, including handlebars. In the 1960s, the term ATV originally meant six-wheeled vehicles that could float on water.

Later, three-wheeled models became very famous in the 1970s. A man named John Plessinger designed the first one called the Tricart in 1967.

Many famous companies helped make ATVs popular around the world. Honda became a leader by introducing the US90 in 1970.

They also made the Big Red in 1982, which was a very famous utility model. Other companies like Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki soon made their own machines too.

In the 1980s, Suzuki sold the QuadRunner LT125 for people just starting out.

Today, ATVs are helpful tools for many different jobs. Farmers use them because they are fast and have a light footprint on the soil.

According to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), an ATV is defined by several specific features. These vehicles utilize low-pressure tires to navigate uneven ground. The operator must straddle a seat, much like a rider on a motorcycle. Steering is controlled through a set of handlebars. While most models feature four wheels, some versions use three, six, or even eight wheels. Because they are built for rugged environments, they can handle much more diverse terrain than standard cars.

The design of an ATV focuses on stability and specific utility. Most standard ATVs are intended for a single operator. However, some manufacturers produce tandem ATVs, which allow for a driver and one passenger.

It is important to distinguish ATVs from utility terrain vehicles (UTVs). UTVs, also called side-by-sides, feature seating arranged side-by-side rather than in a line. While these two classes of vehicles often share similar powertrain components, their physical layouts differ significantly. The extra wheels found on quad models provide greater stability during low-speed maneuvers compared to other styles.

The history of these machines stretches back to the 19th century. In 1893, Royal Enfield built the first powered four-wheeler.

This early machine functioned as a "horseless carriage" for road use and utilized many bicycle components. Interestingly, the term "ATV" originally described different machines in the 1960s. During that era, the name referred to six-wheeled, amphibious vehicles like the Jiger or the Terra Tiger.

These early models were designed to float and move through water. When straddle-ridden models arrived later, the term AATV was used to distinguish the original amphibious category.

Three-wheeled models, or All Terrain Cycles (ATCs), played a massive role in the industry's growth. John Plessinger designed the first three-wheeled ATV, the Sperry-Rand Tricart, in 1967. In 1973, Honda trademarked the term "All Terrain Cycle" (ATC). Honda dominated the market for years due to effective patents regarding engine placement and design. By 1980, other companies like Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki paid royalties to Honda to enter the field. Yamaha introduced the Tri-Moto YZ125, while Suzuki released the ALT125 in 1982. These machines became popular with hunters because they could cross terrain that other vehicles could not.

Safety concerns eventually changed the direction of the entire industry. By 1987, all manufacturers voluntarily stopped producing three-wheeled ATCs. This decision followed safety concerns and preceded new legislation. The manufacturers even agreed to a ten-year moratorium on production. They also collectively financed a safety campaign costing over $100 million. While studies later suggested three-wheelers were not inherently more unstable than four-wheelers, the accidents involved were just as severe. This shift caused the public to move toward four-wheeled models. In the United States, Public Law 110-314 was enacted in 2008 to manage these differences. This law requires new safety standards for three-wheeled ATCs, which has effectively suspended their importation.

The development of four-wheeled ATVs has been led by several major innovators. Adventure Vehicles of Monroe, Louisiana, produced the Avenger 400 in 1980, which was one of the first quad ATVs.

Suzuki became a leader in mass production, selling the QuadRunner LT125 for beginners in 1982. They also introduced the first ATV with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the LT80, in 1987. In 1985, Suzuki released the LT250R QuadRacer, a high-performance machine built specifically for racing. This model featured a liquid-cooled, two-stroke motor and a sophisticated long-travel suspension system.

Today, ATVs serve many vital roles across different sectors of society. In agriculture, they are used extensively because of their speed and light footprint. This light footprint allows them to move across fields without causing as much damage to the soil. The military also utilizes ATVs for various operations in diverse environments.
