In 1812, Richard Trevithick designed a "barn engine" to drive a corn threshing machine. Later, in 1839, William Tuxford invented a truly portable engine. By 1859, Thomas Aveling created the first proper traction engine. He modified a portable engine by adding a long driving chain between the crankshaft and the rear axle.

These early steam engines were often used in pairs to haul a plow between them using a wire cable.

As technology advanced, internal combustion engines replaced steam. In 1889, John Charter built gasoline tractors in Illinois. In 1892, John Froelich built a gasoline-powered tractor in Iowa. Froelich used a gear box to control his machine.

In Britain, Herbert Akroyd Stuart invented the first oil-engined tractor. A major breakthrough came in 1901 when Dan Albone built the Ivel Agricultural Motor. This was a light, powerful, and compact petrol-powered tractor.
