Tractor

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A tractor is a specialized engineering vehicle designed for a specific purpose. Its main goal is to deliver high tractive effort at slow speeds. Tractive effort refers to the pulling force a vehicle can exert. This is often called torque.

While the term is used in mining and construction, it most commonly describes farm vehicles. These machines provide the power and traction needed to mechanize agriculture. They are essential for tasks like tillage, which is the preparation of soil for planting.

A tractor can pull implements behind it or mount them directly to the machine. Some implements are even mechanized, meaning they take power from the tractor to operate.

To understand how a tractor works, we must look at its configuration and power delivery. Most tractors are classified by their number of axles or wheels. The most common type is a four-wheel tractor with two axles.

Many of these use two-wheel drive, typically located at the rear. However, other designs include front-wheel assist or four-wheel drive. Some machines use track crawlers, which are steel or rubber tracks instead of wheels.

These tracks are useful in heavy or wet soils. Modern tractors also feature enclosed cabs. These cabs protect the operator and provide comfort during long hours of work.

The history of the tractor began with steam power. In the early 19th century, farmers used portable engines. These were steam engines on wheels that drove machinery via a flexible belt. In 1812, Richard Trevithick designed a "barn engine" to drive a corn threshing machine. Later, in 1839, William Tuxford invented a truly portable engine. By 1859, Thomas Aveling created the first proper traction engine. He modified a portable engine by adding a long driving chain between the crankshaft and the rear axle.

These early steam engines were often used in pairs to haul a plow between them using a wire cable.

As technology advanced, internal combustion engines replaced steam. In 1889, John Charter built gasoline tractors in Illinois. In 1892, John Froelich built a gasoline-powered tractor in Iowa. Froelich used a gear box to control his machine.

In Britain, Herbert Akroyd Stuart invented the first oil-engined tractor. A major breakthrough came in 1901 when Dan Albone built the Ivel Agricultural Motor. This was a light, powerful, and compact petrol-powered tractor.

It used water cooling through the thermo-syphon effect. It also featured a pulley wheel, allowing it to act as a stationary engine for other machinery.

Mass production changed the industry forever. Henry Ford introduced the Fordson tractor in 1917. This design was lightweight and mass-produced.

Instead of a heavy frame, the Fordson used the strength of the engine block to hold the machine together. This innovation was highly successful. By 1923, the Fordson held 77% of the United States market. Another vital development was the three-point hitch. Harry Ferguson patented a version of this in 1926.

This system is the simplest way to join two bodies in engineering. It allowed implements to be attached securely and efficiently. Many tractors also include a Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft.

This rotating shaft provides power to mounted tools, such as sickle-bar mowers.

The impact of the tractor on society was massive. In 1910, there were only 500 gas tractors in the United States. By 1935, there were nearly a million.

This technology increased farm productivity and reshaped rural landscapes. Farmers also developed specific configurations for different needs. The Farmall introduced the row crop configuration.

This design uses narrow front wheels to drive between rows of crops. Today, the industry is moving toward new energy sources. General Electric introduced the Elec-Trak, the first commercial electric tractor, in 1969. Modern companies like Fendt and Monarch Tractor continue to develop electric and autonomous models.
