He served as the captain of the Iranian national team, known as Team Melli, from 2000 to 2006. His career is defined by historic scoring records and a transition from a star player to a professional coach.

For many years, he held the record as the world's top international goal-scorer with 109 goals. This record remained unbroken until 2021, when Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed him. Later, in 2024, Lionel Messi also moved past Daei's total. Despite these changes, his achievement remains a landmark in the sport.

His journey began in Ardabil, Imperial Iran, where he was born into an Iranian Azerbaijani family. Daei balanced his athletic career with academic studies at Aryamher University of Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Engineering, specifically in metallurgy. He started his professional playing career at age 19 with Esteghlal Ardabil. He later moved to Tehran to play for Taxirani F.C. and Bank Tejarat. At Bank Tejarat, he scored 49 goals in 75 games over four years.

Daei eventually moved to Europe to compete in the German Bundesliga. He played for Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich, and Hertha Berlin. While at Hertha Berlin, he made history as the first Asian player to compete in a UEFA Champions League match. He scored important goals in this prestigious tournament against Chelsea and A.C. Milan.

Although he faced challenges with playing time at Bayern Munich, his time in Europe established his reputation globally.

In 2004, Daei reached a historic milestone during a World Cup qualifier against Laos. He scored four goals in that single match, bringing his total to 102 international goals. This made him the first male player in history to reach the 100-goal mark in international play. He finished his international career with 148 caps for Iran. In 2014, his massive contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Asian Football Hall of Fame.

After retiring from professional play in 2007, Daei moved into managerial roles. He served as the head coach for the Iranian national team starting in 2008. He also managed several clubs, including Saipa, Rah Ahan, and Persepolis.
