Alfredo Baldomir was a man of many different jobs. He was born in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, in 1884. He started his career as a soldier in the military. He studied at the Military Academy starting in 1900. Later, he became an architect who planned buildings. He even spent fifteen years teaching construction at a school.

Baldomir became the President of Uruguay in 1938. He belonged to the Colorado Party. He worked very hard to make life safer for workers. For example, he made rules for safety on building scaffolds. He also made rules for people working on rice plantations. He helped workers get special clothing if they worked in water. He even helped people get loans to pay for their homes.

During his time as leader, he helped create many pensions. A pension is money given to people when they are older. He set up funds for many different groups of people. This included civil servants, military members, and even domestic servants. He also helped farmers and people working in shops. These rules helped people feel more secure in their lives.

World War II brought big changes to his presidency. Uruguay stayed neutral at first during the fighting. However, Baldomir wanted to support the Allies. In 1942, he broke off relations with the Axis Powers. He also used a military coup to change the government. This event was called the "Good Coup." He did this to get rid of the old 1934 constitution.

Baldomir wanted to bring democracy back to Uruguay. He successfully held new elections in 1943. After that, he stepped down from being president. He spent a few more years working for a bank. He died in Montevideo in 1948. People remember him for his many roles and his work for the people.
