He was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1833. His father, Immanuel Nobel, was an engineer who built bridges. Immanuel taught Alfred many things about science and machines. Alfred was a very gifted student from a young age. He learned to speak six different languages fluently. He could speak Swedish, French, Russian, English, German, and Italian.

This helped him work with people all over the world.

Alfred spent much of his life studying how to make explosives safer. He focused on a liquid called nitroglycerin. This liquid was very powerful but also very unstable. It could explode if it got too hot or was shaken. In 1867, Alfred found a way to control it. He mixed the liquid into a soft, earthy substance called kieselguhr. This mixture was much easier and safer to handle. He called this new invention dynamite.

This accident made Alfred want to work in a more isolated area. He started a new company called Nitroglycerin AB to stay safe. Later, his brothers started an oil company called Branobel.
