Alfred spent much of his life studying explosives. He wanted to make them safer to use. One liquid he studied was called nitroglycerin. It was very powerful but very unstable. This meant it could explode easily. In 1867, Alfred made dynamite. He mixed the liquid with a soft earth. This made it much safer to handle. Dynamite helped people build roads and mines. He later made gelignite, which was even stronger.
