He lived through many big changes in his country. He designed buildings for kings and also for communist leaders. He was successful during three different eras of architecture. These eras were Art Nouveau, Constructivism, and Stalinist architecture. He was one of the few architects honored by both the Romanovs and the communists. He even won many Stalin prizes for his work. Shchusev was a man who could adapt to any time.

Shchusev learned a lot by traveling to many different places. He was born in Kishinev, which is now Chișinău, Moldova. When he was a student, he studied in Saint Petersburg. He went on a study tour to Central Asia in 1895. This trip helped him learn about Islamic architecture. Later, he went on a Grand Tour of Europe. He visited places like Vienna, Italy, and Paris. He even studied for six months at the Académie Julian in Paris.

In his early career, Shchusev focused on building beautiful churches. He blended Art Nouveau with the Russian Revival style. This created a new look that people called proto-modernism. He often used asymmetry in his designs. This means one side of a building might look different from the other. He did not just copy old buildings from the past. Instead, he created his own unique visual language. One famous example is the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow.

Shchusev also designed important buildings for travel. In 1911, he won a contest to design a railway station. This became the Kazansky Rail Terminal in Moscow.

He made the long front of the building look like separate parts. He used a style called Naryshkin Baroque for the exterior. The building has a tall clock tower. This tower was inspired by a clocktower in Venice. The work on this huge station took many years to finish. The first part was ready by 1926.

His life was not always easy or smooth. In September 1937, he lost his jobs and design contracts. This happened after a public smear campaign. Some people even accused him of professional dishonesty and plagiarism. Historians today say many of those charges were actually true. However, Shchusev eventually returned to his work. He became known as a leader of Stalinist architecture. His long career shows how much one person can build through changing times.
