Suvorov was born in Moscow to a noble family. His father was a general-in-chief and a senator. While some family legends claimed Swedish origins, modern linguists and historians suggest a Russian lineage. They believe his name likely comes from the Russian word for "severe."

As a child, Alexander was often sickly. His father expected him to work in civil service instead of the military. However, Suvorov was an intense student of many subjects. He studied mathematics, philosophy, geography, and several languages, including French, German, Polish, and Italian. He also read extensively about military strategy and engineering. General Gannibal eventually persuaded Suvorov's father to allow him to join the army at age 17.

Suvorov's early military career provided him with vital experience. He spent nine years in the Semyonovsky Lifeguard Regiment. During the Seven Years' War, he fought against Prussian forces. He participated in the battle of Kunersdorf, which was a major victory over Frederick the Great. In 1762, Suvorov was promoted to the rank of colonel.

He later demonstrated his skill during the War of the Bar Confederation. In this conflict, he captured Kraków and won several victories at Orzechowo and Lanckorona. These early successes began to build his reputation as a capable leader.

His fame grew significantly during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774. Suvorov captured Turtukaya twice and achieved a decisive victory at Kozludzha.

He was later promoted to general and led forces in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792. During this period, he participated in the siege of Ochakov and won victories at Kinburn and Focșani. His decisive victory at the Battle of Rymnik established him as a brilliant general. He also led a successful storming of Izmail against Ottoman forces. These victories made him one of the most respected military figures in Europe.

In 1794, Suvorov played a key role in suppressing the Polish uprising. He achieved success at the battle of Praga and in other locations.

After the death of Catherine the Great in 1796, Suvorov faced difficulties with the new leader, Paul I. However, he was eventually recalled to the rank of field marshal. This occurred during the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. He was given command of the Austro-Russian army to fight against French forces.

He won several battles, such as the battle of the Trebbia, and captured Milan and Turin.

One of Suvorov's most legendary feats took place in the Swiss Alps. After an Austro-Russian army was defeated, Suvorov was ordered to reinforce them. He was instead cut off by the French commander André Masséna. Suvorov's troops were exhausted, ill-supplied, and heavily outnumbered.

Despite these extreme disadvantages, he successfully led his army out of the mountains. This difficult extraction included a prominent battle in the Muottental.

Masséna was so impressed that he reportedly said he would exchange all his victories for Suvorov's passage through the Alps.

Suvorov's successful campaign in Switzerland earned him the promotion to generalissimo. This is the highest military rank. He remained a highly respected figure among his soldiers. They admired him for his honesty and his truthful service. Suvorov died of an illness in Saint Petersburg in 1800.

He is still studied today as a master of military science. His ability to succeed despite a lack of resources remains a notable part of his legacy.
