Alexander Selkirk was a man who lived a very unusual life. He was born in 1676 in a place called Lower Largo, Scotland. As a young man, he was known for being quite unruly. He eventually went to sea to work on ships. During a war between England and Spain, he worked as a privateer. A privateer is a person who sails a ship to attack enemies.

In 1704, Selkirk was sailing on a ship named the Cinque Ports. The ship was led by Captain Thomas Stradling. Selkirk was worried that the ship was not safe to sail. He thought the vessel was too leaky and unseaworthy. Because of this, he asked to be left on an island. The ship stopped at the Juan Fernández Islands near Chile. Selkirk was left on an island called Más a Tierra.

Selkirk lived alone on the island for four years and four months. At first, he stayed near the beach and ate spiny lobsters. He felt very lonely and sad during this time. Eventually, he moved into the center of the island. He found goats there that provided him with meat and milk. He also found wild turnips and pink peppercorns to eat. He even built two small huts out of pepper trees.

He even lived near feral cats to keep rats away. On February 2, 1709, a ship named the Duke finally found him. The crew was led by Woodes Rogers.
