Born in 1854 in Sappemeer, Netherlands, she grew up in a Jewish family. Her father was a doctor, and she wanted to follow in his footsteps. At that time, women could not easily go to higher education. She had to study hard at home with her parents to prepare. Eventually, she became the first woman to attend a Dutch university.

In 1879, she earned the first medical doctorate ever given to a woman in the Netherlands.

After graduating, Jacobs opened a medical practice to help women and children.

She noticed that many poor women faced many health struggles. They often lacked knowledge about hygiene and how to care for children. Jacobs saw that having too many children in a row hurt mothers' health. To help, she began providing information on birth control. In 1882, she founded the world's first birth control clinic.

She even provided a device called a Dutch pessary to help women plan their families.

Jacobs did not just work in a clinic; she also fought for new laws. She began challenging the government about women's right to vote in 1883. Even though the Supreme Court ruled that women were not citizens, she did not stop. She also campaigned for retail workers to have mandatory breaks. At that time, many women stood for over 10 hours without resting. Her hard work helped lead to laws that protected these workers.

Her efforts helped ensure that women had better working conditions and more rights.

Her life was full of important dates and big changes. She married Carel Victor Gerritsen in 1892, a man who also supported social reform. Jacobs traveled the world to speak about the status of women. She helped start the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Through her activism, she helped Dutch women finally win the right to vote in 1919.

Today, we can see how her work changed the world we live in. Many of the rights women have now started with people like Jacobs. The idea that women can be doctors or vote began with her courage. Her work in health and law helped create a path for others to follow. We remember her as a person who saw a problem and worked to fix it.
