This harbour was managed by the Brussels-based Compagnie Générale de Travaux, also known as Cogetra. The harbour was connected to the Helchteren and Zolder coal mines by a 7 km railway line.
The canal played a significant role during World War II. It functioned as a defense line during the conflict. In May 1940, German forces crossed the canal. This event included the destruction of Fort Eben-Emael. This was a major milestone in the German invasion of Belgium. During the Liberation of Belgium in September 1944, several Allied armies crossed the water. The Second Canadian Division was the first Allied unit to cross the canal. The British Army also crossed it while moving through Belgium into the Netherlands. The U.S. Army entered Belgium further east to liberate the country and Luxembourg.
Following the war, the canal returned to its role in reconstruction and trade. On February 7, 1945, the Veldwezelt Bridge near Maastricht was ceremoniously reopened. This event was led by Lt. Gen. John C. H. Lee and Brig. Gen. Ewart Plank. Beyond industry, the canal is now a popular place for leisure. Well-paved service roads run along both sides of the water. These paths allow people to cycle through picturesque farm lands. This is especially common around Smeermaas, Lanaken, and Maasmechelen.
