It is quite massive in its dimensions. The waterway is over 100 meters wide. It also maintains a depth of 6 meters. The course of the canal travels in a south-easterly direction. It passes through the city of Utrecht on its journey. The path continues toward Wijk bij Duurstede. At this location, it intersects the Lek branch of the Rhine river. From there, it reaches the river Waal near the town of Tiel. One specific branch, called the Lek Canal, connects the system to the Lek near Nieuwegein.

This modern canal was built to replace an older system. The predecessor was the Merwede Canal. Excavation for the Merwede Canal began in 1883. It became operational by 1892. However, the Merwede Canal eventually became inadequate for modern needs. Shipping traffic increased significantly over the years. Furthermore, ships themselves became much larger. This meant the old canal could no longer handle the volume or size of the vessels. Engineers had to find a better way to move goods.

Designing a replacement was a long and difficult process. Starting in 1915, experts produced seven different plans. Finally, an eighth plan was created. This plan was developed by Anton Mussert, an engineer for the provincial water board. Construction on the new Amsterdam–Rhine Canal began in 1933. The section between Utrecht and the Lek Canal was the first to be finished in 1938. The northern part used the widened bed of the old Merwede Canal. The southern part was built entirely new. This new section runs past Houten and Wijk bij Duurstede to Tiel. The Second World War caused delays in the construction process. Queen Juliana officially opened the completed canal on 21 May 1952.

As technology advanced, the canal had to change again. Ships continued to grow even larger than before. To accommodate them, the canal required widening. This major expansion project took place between 1965 and 1981. Even today, work is planned to improve the waterway. Engineers plan to widen the Demka bend to improve safety. This specific project is expected to reach completion by the year 2030. The canal remains a heavy-duty piece of infrastructure that must adapt to the needs of global trade.

The sheer scale of activity on the canal is impressive. In 2016, a total of 91,495 vessels sailed through the waterway. This number included 5,541 recreational vessels used for leisure. For people walking or cycling, there are specialized bridges. The Nescio Bridge is the longest cycle bridge in the Netherlands. Other pedestrian paths include the Line Bridge and the Dafne Schippers Bridge. These structures allow the local community to move across the massive waterway safely.

Maintaining the canal also involves managing complex utilities. Electrical cables run near the waterway to provide power. On 17 February 2025, shipping had to stop due to a problem with these cables. A barge became entangled in the electrical cabling. This caused two cables, which carry 150,000 volts, to fall into the water. Shipping was halted so that the cables could be removed safely. This incident highlights the many different systems that must work together around such a busy transport route.
