His career spanned many decades and reached multiple generations of viewers. He was famously described by TV Guide as "the Charlie Chaplin of television" due to his comedic skill. Young was capable of moving between live-action roles and the specialized world of voice performance. This adaptability allowed him to remain a recognizable figure in entertainment from the 1940s through the early 2000s.

Young's professional journey began with a deep connection to the medium of radio. As a child, he suffered from severe asthma that often left him bedridden. During these periods of rest, he developed a profound love for listening to radio programs. This early interest eventually led to his own comedy radio series on the CBC network in Canada. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, he moved to New York City in 1944. An American agent helped him transition to American radio, where he appeared on the Philco Radio Hall of Fame. This success paved the way for his own program, The Alan Young Show, on NBC.

His transition to television brought him significant critical acclaim and household fame. In 1951, his television variety-comedy series, The Alan Young Show, earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards. He won for Best Actor and was also nominated for Most Outstanding Personality. One of his most iconic live-action roles was playing Wilbur Post in the CBS sitcom Mister Ed.

In this series, which aired from 1961 to 1966, Wilbur is the owner of a talking horse. The comedy arose because the horse, Mr. Ed, would only speak to Wilbur, creating difficult situations with his wife and neighbors.

Beyond television, Young built a substantial filmography that included both feature films and specialized roles. He made his film debut in Margie in 1946 and appeared in Chicken Every Sunday in 1949. He was also part of George Pal's notable films, such as Tom Thumb in 1958 and The Time Machine in 1960. In the 1960 film, he played the character David Filby. He later revisited this role in the 1993 mini-sequel, Time Machine: The Journey Back. He also appeared in the 1994 film Beverly Hills Cop III, playing Uncle Dave Thornton.

In the 1970s, Young entered a new phase of his career by focusing on voice acting. He became the definitive voice of Disney's Scrooge McDuck, a role he held for over 40 years. His work with this character began with a 1974 Disneyland Records album. He later voiced the character in the Academy Award-nominated short Mickey's Christmas Carol in 1983. He continued this role in the animated series DuckTales from 1987 to 1990. His voice work also extended to video games, including the Kingdom Hearts series and DuckTales: Remastered.

Young's voice talents were utilized for a wide variety of other famous animated characters. He provided the voice for Farmer Smurf in the series The Smurfs, where he appeared in 49 episodes. He also voiced Haggis McHaggis on The Ren & Stimpy Show and Hiram Flaversham in The Great Mouse Detective. His range included playing 7-Zark-7 and Keyop in Battle of the Planets. Even in his later years, he contributed voices to animated series like Batman: The Animated Series and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

Throughout his life, Young's personal history was as varied as his professional roles. Born Angus Young in North Shields, England, in 1919, he moved to Scotland and then to Canada as a child. He was married three times and had four children. In his later years, he faced challenges regarding his health and finances. He spent his final years at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in California. Alan Young died on May 19, 2016, at the age of 96 and was buried at sea.
