He was known as a man of the people. He spent his whole life in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This was a busy part of New York City. He wanted to help people who worked hard for a living. His ideas changed how the government looked after its citizens. He was a major part of the Progressive movement in America.

His life started with many hard jobs.

His father died when Al was only 13 years old. Because his family needed money, he had to leave school. He worked at a fish market for seven years. He earned 12 dollars every week during that time. He learned a lot about people while working there. He also practiced acting in local theater groups. This helped him learn how to give great speeches later in life.

Al Smith used his voice to make things safer.

In 1911, a very sad fire happened at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Many workers died in that fire. Al helped lead a group to investigate what went wrong. They interviewed 222 witnesses and looked at 3,500 pages of notes. This work led to 38 new laws in New York. These laws required things like fire extinguishers and alarm systems. They also helped protect women and children at work.

He went on to become the governor of New York.

He served as governor from 1919 to 1920 and again from 1923 to 1928. Al was a member of the Democratic Party. He was also a "wet," which meant he did not like Prohibition. Prohibition was a law that banned alcohol. He helped repeal the state's law against alcohol. He also helped build the first state park system in the country.

In 1928, Al Smith ran for President of the United States.

He was the first Catholic to be a major party's nominee. This was a very big deal at the time. Some people were worried because of his religion. He lost the election to the Republican, Herbert Hoover. After politics, Al helped with the construction of the Empire State Building. He remained a famous figure in New York history until he died in 1944.
