Al-Nasir Muhammad was a significant sultan of the Bahri Mamluk dynasty.

He ruled Egypt during three distinct periods between 1293 and 1341. His life was defined by a struggle for true authority. For much of his early life, other powerful men made the decisions. Eventually, he became a ruler who exercised full control over his empire. His reign shaped the political and social landscape of the Mamluk Sultanate.

His political journey followed a complex path through three different phases. In his first reign, he was only eight years old.

Because he was a child, he was a sultan in name only. Powerful leaders like Kitbugha and al-Shuja‘i held the actual power. This period ended when Kitbugha deposed him. An-Nasir was then sent away to live in al-Karak. His second reign began in 1299 when he was fourteen. During this time, he was still heavily influenced by two emirs named Salar and Baibars. It was not until his third reign that he truly ruled alone.

An-Nasir's rise to power involved many shifts in military leadership. During his second reign, the Burji Mamluks grew very influential. They used a system called "Himayah" to collect taxes from people. This was often a form of official bribery for protection. To manage his empire, An-Nasir eventually changed how he appointed officials. In his final reign, he gave senior military positions to non-Mamluks. He chose people who were personally loyal to him. He also removed capable officers if he suspected they were not loyal. This helped him prevent the kind of domination he faced as a boy.

Conflict with the Mongol Ilkhanate was a major part of his middle years. In 1299, the Mongol leader Ghazan prepared to attack the Levant. An-Nasir led an Egyptian army of about 20,000 soldiers to meet him. This clash is known as the Battle of Wadi al-Khazandar.

Ghazan commanded an army of approximately 12,000 men. The Egyptian forces were defeated in this battle. However, the casualties for An-Nasir's army were relatively low, between 200 and 1,000 men. Ghazan's army suffered about 2,500 casualties. The defeat caused many people to flee Damascus and seek refuge in Egypt.

An-Nasir also worked to improve the lives of common people. He took steps to stop the unfair treatment of the public. He annulled several taxes and surcharges. These extra costs had been imposed on commoners to benefit the emirs and officials. To ensure fairness, he appointed Emir Ibn al-Waziri to lead the Court of Justice. Ibn al-Waziri was known for being very tough on corruption.

By fighting corruption, An-Nasir helped stabilize the internal government of Egypt.

His personal life and culture also underwent notable changes. He was the third son of Sultan Qalawun and his mother was Ašlūn. An-Nasir was raised following Mongol customs for many years. This included wearing long, flowing locks of hair. However, he had a change of mood after becoming ill in 1315. Following this illness, he and his followers shaved their heads. He also married a Turkic woman named Khawand Toghay. She began her life as his slave but he later freed her.

An-Nasir Muhammad's legacy is visible in the art and architecture of his era.

Many beautiful objects were produced during his long rule. These included decorated brass bowls and religious items.

His ability to navigate the dangerous politics of the Mamluk system was remarkable. He transformed from a puppet ruler into a sovereign leader. His life shows how individual choices can change the course of an empire.
