technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a huge bridge in Japan.

It links the city of Kobe to Awaji Island. It crosses the Akashi Strait. This sea area has very strong winds and storms. Long ago, people used ferries to cross the water. Sadly, some ferries sank during bad weather. This made the government want to build a safe bridge.

This is a suspension bridge. That means long cables hold up the road. The bridge has two tall towers. It also has two anchorages. These are large parts on land that hold the cables. The central span is 1,991 meters long. In 1995, a big earthquake hit the area. The earthquake moved the towers. This made the middle part of the bridge longer!

The bridge is very strong. It can stand up to big waves and wind. It even has tuned mass dampers. These are tools that help stop the bridge from shaking too much. At night, the bridge has many lights. They can change colors for holidays.
