arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ahlam Mosteghanemi is a famous Algerian poet and writer. She was the first Algerian woman to write poetry and stories in Arabic. This was very important for her country. For over a hundred years, French rules meant people could not study in Arabic. Ahlam belonged to the first group that could write in her own language again.

She uses her words to share big feelings. She believes that poetry is for love, but novels are for a homeland. Her work helps people feel connected to their culture.

Ahlam began her career by using her voice on the radio. At age seventeen, she had a popular show called Hammassat, which means Whispers. She shared poems with listeners every day.

Later, she moved from writing short poems to writing long stories. She spent fifteen years in Paris writing for different magazines. During this time, she worked on pieces that became her first novel. Writing became her way to stay connected to Algeria while living far away.

Her family history is tied to the history of Algeria. Her father was a nationalist who fought for his country. He was even put in prison after the Sétif riots in 1945.

Because of these hard times, Ahlam's family moved to Tunis, Tunisia. She was born there in 1953. Her father later held important jobs in the government of Ahmed Ben Bella. These experiences with politics and change shaped the stories she tells today.

Ahlam has written many books that people all over the Arab world read. Her most famous novel is Memory of the Flesh, published in 1993.

This book was a huge success and sold over 130,000 copies. It won the Naguib Mahfouz Prize in 1998. She also wrote a book called Black Suits You So Well in 2012. This story follows a young teacher facing many hard jobs. She even started the Malek Haddad Literary Prize to help others write in Arabic.

Many people see Ahlam as a very important leader. In 2007 and 2008, a magazine named her one of the most influential Arabs.

She also works as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. Some people, like the poet Nizar Qabbani, were very moved by her writing. Even a former president called her an Algerian sun. Her life shows how writing can shine a light even in dark times.
