Agustín Gamarra was a famous soldier and leader from Peru. He was born on August 27, 1785. Gamarra was a Mestizo. This means he had mixed Spanish and Quechua descent.

He spent much of his life in the military. He fought against royalist forces to help Peru gain independence. He was even the second in command after Andrés de Santa Cruz. Later, he fought in the Battle of Ayacucho. This important battle helped shape the future of the region.

Gamarra served as the President of Peru two different times. During his first term, he had a very active character. He often left the capital city of Lima to stop rebellions. He sometimes left the presidency to Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente. This man was very bossy and made other officials angry. Gamarra also had many hard jobs while leading. He even closed the Congress in 1832. These struggles made his first time as leader very difficult.

One big idea that Gamarra had was about Bolivia. He wanted to join Peru and Bolivia into one single nation. He shared this goal with Andrés de Santa Cruz. However, the leaders in Bolivia did not want this. In 1835, a group called the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy was formed. Gamarra did not like this group at all. He worked with Chile to fight against it. This led to the Battle of Yungay.

Gamarra won that fight and became president for a second time. He was called the "Restaurador del Perú" because of his actions. During this second term, he had to deal with many fights. He had to try to keep peace in his own country. At the same time, he was fighting a war against Bolivia. He believed Bolivia was helping leaders who rebelled against him. This made the conflict even harder to manage.

His life ended during a very difficult time for Peru. In 1841, Gamarra led an invasion of Bolivia. He was defeated and killed at the Battle of Ingavi. This battle happened on November 18, 1841. After he died, Peru went through a time called the Military Anarchy. Many different leaders fought for power for several years. This period of trouble did not end until 1845. Finally, President Ramón Castilla brought order back to the land.
