Agustín Gamarra was a soldier and leader from Peru. He was born in 1785. He was of mixed Spanish and Quechua descent. Gamarra spent his life in the military. He fought to help Peru become free.

He served as president of Peru two times. During his first term, he faced many fights. He often left the capital city, Lima, to stop rebellions. He also had trouble with the group that made laws, called Congress. He even closed Congress in 1832.

Gamarra had a big goal. He wanted to join Peru and Bolivia into one nation. This idea caused many wars. In 1835, he fought to stop a group called the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy. He won that fight and became president again.

His second time as leader was also hard. He faced many fights within his own country. He also fought a war against Bolivia. In 1841, Gamarra died in a battle called the Battle of Ingavi. After he died, many leaders fought for power. This time of trouble lasted until 1845.
