Agricultural science

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Agricultural science is a huge field of study. It uses many different sciences to understand farming. Scientists in this field are called agriculturists. They look at biology to help grow plants and animals. This work helps us make food for everyone. It also helps us protect our natural world.

There are many ways to study this work. Agronomy is a special part that focuses on crops. Geoponics is the science of growing things in the earth. Some people even use hydroponics to grow plants. This means they use water instead of soil. They use mineral solutions in a special setting. This helps plants grow without any dirt at all.

People have studied farming for a very long time. In the 1700s, Johann Friedrich Mayer tested gypsum as fertilizer. This is a type of calcium sulfate. In 1843, two men started field tests in England. John Bennet Lawes and Joseph Henry Gilbert worked at Rothamsted Research. Some of those tests are still running today! In 1887, the Hatch Act helped science in the United States.

Scientists today face many hard jobs. Climate change makes the weather hard to predict. We see more floods and long droughts. Heatwaves can also make farming very difficult. This can lead to soil erosion and less water. To help, scientists use climate-smart strategies. They create crops that can survive heat and drought. They also find ways to use less water and nutrients.

Many famous people have helped this science grow. Norman Borlaug is one very important name. Other scientists include George Washington Carver and Gregor Mendel. People like Louis Pasteur and Jethro Tull also made big impacts. They studied many things like soil and animals. This work connects to how we eat every day. It helps keep our food supply strong and safe.
