Agricultural pollution happens when farming activities harm the environment. It can change the air, soil, and water. This pollution comes from many different places on a farm. Some pollution comes from one single spot, like a pipe. Other pollution spreads out across the whole landscape. This is called non-point source pollution. These pollutants can hurt local wildlife or make drinking water unsafe. They can even create dead zones in large bodies of water.
Many different things cause this pollution. Farmers use pesticides to stop pests from eating crops. Without these, about 40 percent of crops might be lost. However, some pesticides stay in the soil for many years. For example, chemicals like 2,4-D can last for 20 years. These can also soak into the ground through a process called leaching. This happens when rain or extra water carries chemicals deep into the earth. 
Fertilizers are another major source of farm pollution. They provide nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to help plants grow. If too much is used, the extra nutrients wash away as runoff. This can lead to a problem called eutrophication. This is when too many tiny plants, like algae, grow in the water. These blooms can use up all the oxygen in the water. This makes it very hard for fish and other animals to survive. 
Nitrogen and phosphorus can also bring other risks. Too much nitrogen in groundwater can cause health issues for human infants. It can also change which insects live in a river. Some insects, like mayflies, are very sensitive to these changes. Phosphorus can also cause harmful toxins to grow in the water. Even the rocks used to make fertilizer can contain metals like cadmium. This metal can move from the fertilizer into the soil and plants. 
Farming also creates physical waste that stays in nature. Farmers use a lot of plastic for seed bags and covering food. A study by the FAO found that 10 million tons of plastic waste are made each year. Much of this plastic is never collected from the land. Farm machines can also cause problems through oil spills or leaks. Even the soil can be lost through erosion when it washes away. Managing these things well is key to a sustainable food system.

This process creates hypoxic or anoxic conditions, which are low or no-oxygen environments that can be deadly to aquatic species. Nitrate levels above 10 mg/L in groundwater can cause "blue baby syndrome" in infants. Nitrogen can also release NH3 gases or N2O, a greenhouse gas that may destroy stratospheric ozone. 
Phosphorus is another essential nutrient that can cause environmental disruption. Most phosphorus is applied as phosphate (PO43-) through synthetic salts, manure, or compost. Because phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient, even small amounts can trigger massive algae and cyanobacteria blooms. These blooms can produce cyanotoxins that harm humans, animals, and aquatic life. Additionally, the phosphate rock used in fertilizers may contain cadmium or fluoride. Continuous use of high-cadmium fertilizer can contaminate soil and plants. 
Animal agriculture and physical waste also contribute to environmental degradation. Manure management is critical, as bacteria and pathogens in manure can reach streams if storage in lagoons is poorly managed. 
Land management practices directly affect soil health and stability. Intensive management can lead to soil erosion and sedimentation. It is estimated that agricultural land degradation causes an irreversible decline in fertility on about 6 million hectares of fertile land every year.
