Aestivation helps animals stay safe. It stops them from drying out. It also helps them save power. This is called a low metabolic rate. This means their bodies work very slowly. They use less energy and less water. They can even do this for years!

Many different animals aestivate. Some snails climb up fences or tall plants. They make a seal on their shells. This seal is made of dried mucus. We call this an epiphragm. It keeps water inside the snail.

Other animals hide in the ground. The water-holding frog buries itself in sand. It makes a cocoon of mucus to stay wet. Some crabs also hide underground during dry times. Even some mammals do this. A small lemur can rest in a tree hole for seven months. Most animals can wake up very fast when it is cool again.
