Born William West Anderson on September 19, 1928, in Walla Walla, Washington, he became a central figure in mid-century pop culture. His upbringing was shaped by a diverse family background. His father, Otto Anderson, was a farmer with ancestral roots in Scania, Sweden. His mother, Audrey Volenne, was a professional opera singer and concert pianist. Following his parents' divorce, West moved to Seattle at age 15 to attend Lakeside School. He later pursued higher education at Whitman College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in literature and a minor in psychology.

Before achieving stardom, West gained practical experience through military service and various jobs. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as an announcer for the American Forces Network television. After his military discharge, he worked as a milkman to support himself. He eventually moved to Hawaii, where he began his television career by hosting The Kini Popo Show. This program also featured a chimpanzee named Peaches. In 1959, West moved to Hollywood with his wife and two children. He adopted the professional stage name Adam West to begin his journey in the film and television industry.

West's early career involved a wide variety of guest roles and supporting parts. He appeared in several Western television series, including Sugarfoot, Colt .45, and Lawman. On these ABC programs, he frequently portrayed the character Doc Holliday, a frontier dentist and gunfighter. He also appeared in the science fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars in 1964, playing Colonel Dan McCready. West worked in various genres, from the detective series Robert Taylor's Detectives to the sitcom Petticoat Junction. He even participated in a pilot for a series titled Alexander the Great alongside William Shatner. Although that specific series was not picked up, the pilot was later released as a television film in 1968.

His career reached a turning point when he was cast as Batman in the 1966 ABC television series.

Producer William Dozier selected West for the role of Bruce Wayne after seeing him in a Nestlé Quik commercial. West competed against actor Lyle Waggoner for the part. The series was famous for its campy tone and ran from 1966 to 1968. A theatrical feature film version was also released in 1966. During this era, West engaged in various promotional activities as the character. He released a novelty song titled "Miranda" and appeared in public service announcements to encourage children to buy U.S. savings stamps.

Following the conclusion of the Batman series, West faced the professional challenge of being typecast. This means that audiences and casting directors primarily associated him with his role as the Caped Crusader. He found it difficult to secure diverse roles for a period. He attempted to break this image by playing a cynical tough guy named Johnny Cain in the film The Girl Who Knew Too Much. However, the film was a box office disappointment and did not change his public perception. For a time, he relied on personal appearances as Batman to make a living. He also appeared in various films and television guest spots throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

In later decades, West experienced a resurgence as a pop culture icon through voice acting and comedic roles. He often reprised his Batman persona in animated series like The New Adventures of Batman and Super Friends. He also provided voices for various DC Comics projects. In the 1990s and 2000s, he appeared as himself in several popular sitcoms. These included The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Johnny Bravo. In Family Guy, he played a comedic version of himself known as Mayor Adam West. This era allowed him to embrace his status as a beloved figure in entertainment history.

Adam West's legacy is marked by his enduring connection to the character of Batman and his recognition by the industry. In 2012, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He maintained residences in both Palm Springs, California, and Ketchum, Idaho. West passed away on June 9, 2017. Even after his death, his work continued to celebrate his most famous role. Two animated films, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face, were released to mark the 50th anniversary of the original series. These projects ensured that his contribution to the world of superheroes remained vibrant for new generations.
