People lived on this hill a long time ago. They built a thick wall for safety. This wall was made of large stone blocks.

In the fifth century BC, a leader named Pericles led a big building project. This was a special time called the Golden Age.

Architects and sculptors made many grand buildings. The most famous is the Parthenon. There is also the Propylaea, which is a large gate.

Another building is the Erechtheion. This temple has statues of women holding up the roof.

Many things happened to these buildings over time. During a war in 480 BC, the Persians invaded and burned the site. Much later, in 1687, a fight with the Venetians caused an explosion. This happened because gunpowder was stored in the Parthenon. Even with these hard times, the ruins still stand today.
