Acoustics

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Acoustics is a special branch of science. It is the study of mechanical waves. These waves move through gases, liquids, and solids.

Scientists who study these waves are called acousticians. People who work with sound technology are called acoustical engineers. This science is very important to our modern world. It helps us with music and medicine. It even helps with architecture and warfare.

Hearing is a key way that animals survive. For humans, speech is a huge part of our culture.

Every sound follows a specific way it works. It starts with a cause that creates energy. This energy is turned into a sound wave through transduction.

The next step is wave propagation. This is when the wave moves through a medium. In fluids like air, it moves as a pressure wave. In solids, the waves can take many different forms. The wave carries energy from one place to another. Eventually, that energy is turned into a different form again. This can be a physical effect or a biological one.

People have studied sound for a very long time. The philosopher Pythagoras lived in the 6th century BC. He wanted to know why some musical sounds were beautiful. He found that musical tones come from numerical ratios on a string.

Later, the Roman engineer Vitruvius wrote about theater acoustics. He even suggested using bronze vessels to help sounds resonate. During the Islamic golden age, al-Bīrūnī studied sound speed. He believed sound was much slower than light. These early thinkers helped build the foundation of science.

Science moved very fast during the Scientific Revolution. Galileo Galilei studied how vibrations spread through the air.

Between 1630 and 1680, researchers measured the speed of sound. Athanasius Kircher published major books on music and sound in the 1600s. Isaac Newton also found a way to describe wave velocity in solids. In the 1800s, Lord Rayleigh wrote a famous work called The Theory of Sound. By the 1900s, we used sound to find submarines in wars. We also used sound to invent the telephone and sound recording.

We can group all sounds into three main sections. The audio range is what our ears can hear. This goes from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

High frequencies above 20,000 Hz are called ultrasonic. Doctors use these high sounds for medical images.

Very low frequencies are called infrasonic. These low sounds help us study earthquakes. You can think of these like different lanes on a highway. Each lane carries a different kind of sound energy.
