Acoustics

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Acoustics is a specialized branch of continuum mechanics. It focuses on the study of mechanical waves. These waves travel through gases, liquids, and solids.

The field covers many topics, including vibration and sound. It also explores ultrasound and infrasound. Scientists who study these phenomena are called acousticians. Those who develop sound-based technology are called acoustical engineers. This science is vital to almost every part of modern society. It influences music, medicine, architecture, and even industrial production.

Every acoustical event follows a specific five-step process. First, a cause generates energy. Second, a process called transduction converts that energy into sonic energy. This creates a sound wave.

Third, the wave undergoes propagation. Propagation is the movement of the wave through a medium. In fluids like air or water, sound moves primarily as a pressure wave. In solids, waves can be longitudinal, transverse, or surface waves. Fourth, the wave interacts with its environment. It might experience reflection, diffraction, interference, or refraction. Finally, the energy is transduced again into a different form. This result can be a physical effect or a biological response.

We can categorize sound into three distinct frequency ranges. The audio range is the most familiar. It falls between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.

This is the range humans can detect with their ears. It is essential for speech and music. The ultrasonic range involves very high frequencies. These are frequencies above 20,000 Hz. Because they have shorter wavelengths, they offer high resolution for imaging. Medical tools like ultrasonography rely on these waves.

The infrasonic range consists of very low frequencies. These are frequencies below 20 Hz. Scientists use infrasound to study geological events like earthquakes.

Humanity has investigated sound for thousands of years. In the 6th century BC, Pythagoras studied musical harmony. He discovered that harmonious tones come from integer ratios on vibrating strings.

For example, a string twice as long as another produces an octave lower. Around 20 BC, the Roman engineer Vitruvius studied architectural acoustics. He described sound as a three-dimensional wave similar to water waves. He even suggested placing bronze vessels in theaters to aid resonance.

During the Islamic golden age, al-Bīrūnī noted that sound travels slower than light.

Scientific understanding accelerated during the Scientific Revolution. Galileo Galilei studied how vibrations produce waves that stimulate the ear.

Between 1630 and 1680, researchers like Marin Mersenne measured the speed of sound. In 1687, Isaac Newton derived the relationship for wave velocity in solids. This became a cornerstone of physical acoustics. Later, in the 19th century, Lord Rayleigh published "The Theory of Sound." This monumental work combined many previous discoveries. During this time, scientists also found links between electricity and acoustics.

Modern technology has expanded the reach of acoustics significantly. In the 20th century, underwater acoustics helped detect submarines during the First World War. The invention of the telephone and sound recording transformed global communication. Electronics and computing have also increased the accuracy of sound measurement. We now use new types of transducers to generate and receive acoustic energy. These tools allow for sophisticated analysis of sound pressure levels. Sound pressure is measured on a logarithmic scale using decibels.

Today, acoustics connects many different fields of study. It bridges the gap between physics and biology. In medicine, it helps doctors see inside the human body. In architecture, it helps design spaces like concert halls.

Even in nature, acoustics is vital for survival. Songbirds and frogs use sound to mark territories or find mates. The science of acoustics continues to evolve through the interaction of art, craft, and technology.
