Acidobacteriota

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Acidobacteriota are a group of tiny living things. We call them bacteria. They live in many places. You can find them in soil and oceans. They also live in caves and hot springs. Some live in wood that is rotting. They can even live in soil with metal in it.

These bacteria are very common in dirt. They can make up 52% of all bacteria in the soil. Many like to live in sour places. We call these acidophilic, or acid-loving, microbes. Some live in very sour mine water. They can handle a pH of 2 to 3. This means the liquid is very sour.

Scientists find them hard to study. It is difficult to grow them in a lab. This makes it hard to learn how they work. New ways to grow them use high amounts of CO2. CO2 is a gas in the air. Even with this, we only know about 30% of their types. We are still learning how they use food and air. This is a new field of science.
