Acadia National Park is a unique protected area located along the mid-section of the Maine coast.

It serves as the only national park in the Northeastern United States. The park covers about half of Mount Desert Island and includes the Schoodic Peninsula.

It also encompasses the majority of Isle au Haut and several smaller islands. These include Baker Island, Bar Island, and three of the four Porcupine Islands. The park's diverse landscape consists of mountains, lakes, streams, wetlands, forests, and coastlines. This variety supports many different types of plants and animals.

The geography of the park is defined by dramatic physical features. Many mountains rise above the landscape, including twenty-six significant peaks. These mountains range in height from Flying Mountain to Cadillac Mountain.

Cadillac Mountain is the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. Because of its height and eastern location, it is a special place for observers. From October 7 through March 6, it is the first place in the U.S. to see the sunrise. The landscape also features U-shaped valleys and granite domes. Glacial erratics, which are large rocks moved by ice, are found throughout the area.

One notable feature is Somes Sound, a long fjard formed during a glacial period. This deep water nearly divides Mount Desert Island in half.

The park's history is very deep, stretching back over 12,000 years. The Wabanaki Confederacy, known as the "People of the Dawnland," originally inhabited this area.

This confederacy included five nations: the Maliseet, Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy, Abenaki, and Penobscot. The Wabanaki used birch bark canoes to navigate the waters for hunting and fishing. They also gathered berries and sweetgrass for basket-making. In the 17th century, European explorers and fur traders arrived. This period brought significant changes and conflict to the region. By the 19th century, the area saw an influx of summer visitors and wealthy families.

Establishing the park required the work of dedicated conservationists. George B. Dorr is often called the "Father of Acadia National Park."

The park underwent several name changes before reaching its current title. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it Sieur de Monts National Monument. It was renamed Lafayette National Park in 1919. Finally, the name Acadia National Park was adopted in 1929. The park's boundaries were further established by an act of Congress in 1986. This included land held under conservation easements managed by the National Park Service.

A historic feature of the park is the carriage road system. These roads were designed and financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr.

They are located on Mount Desert Island and are still maintained today. These paths are unique because motor vehicles are prohibited on them. This allows for quiet activities like hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. The roads weave through the landscape, connecting different scenic areas. They offer a way to experience the forests and mountains without the noise of cars.

Today, Acadia is a major destination for recreation. Visitors enjoy many activities depending on the season. In spring through autumn, people use the Park Loop Road for touring.

They also engage in rock climbing, kayaking, and swimming at Sand Beach.

In the winter, the activities shift to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.

Visitation has grown steadily, reaching a record 4.07 million visitors in 2021.

The park's environment is a complex system of land and sea. The coastline features diverse habitats like Otter Cove and Thunder Hole.

These areas show how waves and geology interact to shape the coast. The presence of both freshwater lakes and saltwater oceans creates a rich ecological setting. From the high peaks of Cadillac Mountain to the deep waters of Somes Sound, Acadia protects a vital piece of the American coastline. It remains a place where history, geology, and nature meet.
