People have lived here for a long time. The Wabanaki people have called this area home for at least 12,000 years. Visitors can explore the park in many ways. It was renamed Lafayette National Park in 1919. Finally, the name Acadia National Park was adopted in 1929. The park's boundaries were further established by an act of Congress in 1986. This included land held under conservation easements managed by the National Park Service.
A historic feature of the park is the carriage road system. These roads were designed and financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. 
Today, Acadia is a major destination for recreation. Visitors enjoy many activities depending on the season. In spring through autumn, people use the Park Loop Road for touring. They also engage in rock climbing, kayaking, and swimming at Sand Beach.
