He was a revolutionary who wanted to change how the country worked. He used a name called Chairman Gonzalo to hide his true identity. His group wanted to take power from the government through a violent fight. This movement is a very important part of Peru's history. It changed many lives in the country.

Guzmán followed a set of ideas called Maoism to guide his work. These ideas came from a leader in China named Mao Zedong. He believed in a "people's war" to help Indigenous people. He also studied other ideas like Marxism and Leninism. He thought the old way of running the country would soon fall apart. His followers even called him the "Fourth Sword of Communism."

Before he became a rebel leader, Guzmán was a teacher. He was born in a port town called Mollendo in 1934. He earned degrees in philosophy and law in the city of Arequipa. In 1962, he became a professor at a university in Ayacucho. He even learned to speak Quechua to talk to local people. He traveled to China and Albania to learn more about politics. These trips helped shape his plan for the Shining Path.

The Shining Path started its armed struggle on May 17, 1980. They began by burning ballot boxes in a village called Chuschi. This was done to stop the first democratic elections in many years. The group grew to control large areas in the countryside. They fought the army, the police, and even regular citizens. A group called the Truth and Reconciliation Commission found that 70,000 people died during this time.

In 1992, police agents in Lima finally found Guzmán. They watched a house in a neighborhood called Surco. They noticed the trash from the house did not match one person. They also found medicine for a skin problem Guzmán had. On September 12, they raided the house and caught him. He was sentenced to life in prison for terrorism and murder. He remained in prison until he died in 2021.
