He was a professor of philosophy. He studied many big ideas about how to run a country. He used ideas from leaders like Mao Zedong. Guzmán started a group called the Shining Path in 1969. This group wanted to start a revolution. They used force to try to take power from the government.

The Shining Path began a war in 1980. They fought the army and the police. They also attacked many regular people. This war caused a lot of harm. A group called the Truth and Reconciliation Commission said about 70,000 people died. This was a very sad time for Peru.

In 1992, the police found Guzmán. They watched a house in the city of Lima. They saw a lot of trash being taken out. They found cream used for a skin problem he had. Agents raided the house and caught him. Guzmán was sent to prison for life. He stayed in prison until he died in 2021.
