A Moveable Feast

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A Moveable Feast is a famous memoir about life in Paris.

It tells the story of Ernest Hemingway during the 1920s. At that time, he was a writer and a journalist. He lived a hard life as an expatriate in France. The book captures his early years and his first marriage. He was married to a woman named Hadley Richardson.

This book matters because it shows a special time in history. It explores the lives of the "Lost Generation" of artists. Many people love it because it feels like a journey through time.

The story began with a surprising discovery in a hotel.

In 1956, Hemingway found two small steamer trunks. He had left them in the basement of the Hôtel Ritz Paris. These trunks were made by Louis Vuitton. Inside, he found a collection of many different things. There were menus, receipts, and even fishing gear. Most importantly, he found his old lined notebooks.

He had filled these notebooks with careful handwriting. He wrote in them while sitting in his favorite café. He used them to record the people and places he saw.

Hemingway worked on the book for many years.

He started writing the memoir in Cuba during the autumn of 1957. He continued his work in Ketchum, Idaho, during the winter of 1958-59. In April 1959, he took the writing to Spain. He brought it back to Cuba and then to Idaho again. He finally finished the book in the spring of 1960. Hemingway passed away in July 1961 before the book was published. His fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, helped bring the work to the world.

The first edition was published in 1964.

Mary Hemingway made many edits to the original manuscripts. She changed the order of some chapters to keep things in order. Some people, like scholar Gerry Brenner, questioned her choices. They wondered if she changed too much of the original text. In 2009, his grandson Seán Hemingway published a "Restored Edition."

This new version added back many of the author's original words. It also included parts that were left out before. This helps readers see exactly what Hemingway wrote.

The book has a very special title.

A "moveable feast" is a term for a holy day without a fixed date. His friend A. E. Hotchner suggested this title. Today, the book is part of our culture. It has been mentioned in many movies like Midnight in Paris.

It even appears as a book on a shelf in Captain America. In France, the book is a symbol of love for Paris. It shows how much people cherish the spirit of the city.
