2I/Borisov

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A special visitor once traveled through our solar system. This visitor was a comet named 2I/Borisov. It was the first rogue comet ever seen. It was also the second interstellar object found. An interstellar object comes from a different star system. This makes 2I/Borisov very important to scientists. It helps us learn about places far beyond our own sun.

This comet works much like a snowball in space. It has a solid center called a nucleus. This nucleus is wrapped in a coma. A coma is a huge cloud of dust and gas. As the comet moves near the sun, it loses mass. It lost at least 0.4% of its mass during its visit. The comet also loses about 60 kg of water every second. This process creates a very long tail. Astronomers said the tail was 14 times the size of Earth.

A man named Gennadiy Borisov found the comet. He is an amateur astronomer from Crimea. He even built his own telescope to look at the sky. He discovered the comet on August 29, 2019. This discovery was compared to finding Pluto. Other scientists like Davide Farnocchia helped study it too. They all worked to prove it came from another star system.

Many numbers tell the story of this comet's journey. It reached its closest point to the sun on December 8, 2019. It came closest to Earth on December 28, 2019. The comet has a very fast path called a hyperbolic orbit. Its eccentricity, or path shape, is 3.36. This is much higher than most comets in our system. It also travels much faster than the Voyager 1 spacecraft.

We can compare this comet to things we know. Its tail is like a giant, glowing ribbon in the dark. The comet's chemistry is a bit unusual. It has a lot of carbon monoxide. It also has amines, which are special molecules. This makes it different from the comets we usually see. Studying 2I/Borisov is like looking at a piece of another world. It connects our solar system to the rest of the galaxy.
