Arrokoth is a small, icy object found in the Kuiper belt.

This belt is a ring of many objects far past Neptune and Pluto. Arrokoth is special because it is a contact binary. This means it is made of two separate parts joined together. The two parts look like a snowman. They are connected by a narrow neck of material.

Scientists study it to learn how things in space first formed.

The object has two parts named Wenu and Weeyo. Wenu is the larger lobe and is slightly flattened. Weeyo is the smaller lobe and is shaped more like a sphere. These two parts likely used to be separate objects called planetesimals. They probably moved near each other and merged in a very slow collision. This gentle merger left them in a near-parallel alignment. The two parts are now stuck together by their own gravity.

Astronomers first found Arrokoth on June 26, 2014. Marc Buie and the New Horizons Search Team used the Hubble Space Telescope for this discovery. Before it had a permanent name, people called it "Ultima Thule." NASA later gave it the official name Arrokoth in November 2019. This name comes from the Powhatan people of the eastern United States. It is a word that may have meant sky or cloud.

Arrokoth is about 35 kilometers long at its widest part. The New Horizons spacecraft flew past it on January 1, 2019. This was the farthest object in our solar system ever visited by a probe. The surface is very red due to things called tholins. Tholins are organic compounds made by cosmic rays and solar radiation. The surface is also very smooth with very few craters. This is because objects in the Kuiper belt move quite slowly.

You can think of Arrokoth as a time capsule from the early solar system. Its surface has changed very little since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. Because it has so few craters, it shows us what the early space rocks looked like. The red color is a sign of the chemicals left behind from long ago. Studying Arrokoth helps us understand the building blocks of our entire solar system. It is a tiny piece of history floating in the dark.
