The earthquake happened because of how the Earth's giant plates move. The Indian plate pushes northward into the Eurasian plate at a speed of about 5 centimeters per year.

This constant pushing creates a lot of stress near the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Near the Sichuan Basin, this movement meets strong resistance from the South China Block. This resistance causes stress to build up along the Longmenshan Fault.

Eventually, the ground can no longer hold the stress and it breaks suddenly. This sudden break is what we feel as an earthquake.

The rupture, or the part of the fault that broke, lasted close to 120 seconds. Most of the energy was released during the first 80 seconds of this time. The break started at a place called Wenchuan and moved northeast.

It traveled at an average speed of about 5 kilometers per second. During this time, the ground surface moved by several meters in some spots. The earthquake actually happened in more than one stage as the fault tore.

This earthquake caused many dangerous natural events called geohazards.

It triggered about 200,000 landslides across the area. It also created more than 800 quake lakes. These lakes are formed when landslides block rivers. These geohazards were likely responsible for at least one third of the deaths. Sadly, over 69,000 people lost their lives in the disaster. Many others were injured or went missing in the aftermath. Measuring at a magnitude of 8.0, the event was one of the most powerful in recent history. The epicenter was located west-northwest of Chengdu, the provincial capital. This earthquake was the deadliest to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake. It also stood as the 18th deadliest earthquake of all time. The tremors were felt across vast distances. People in Beijing and Shanghai felt the ground shake. Even in Bangkok, Thailand, and Hanoi, Vietnam, the earthquake was noticed.

The earthquake was caused by complex movements between Earth's tectonic plates. The Indian plate moves northward, colliding with the Eurasian plate at about 5 centimeters per year.

This collision causes the Tibetan Plateau to rise and pushes crustal material eastward. As this material moves toward the Sichuan Basin, it meets strong resistance from the South China Block. This resistance causes massive stress to accumulate along the Longmenshan Fault. This fault is a thrust structure located at the border of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. Eventually, the stress becomes too great, leading to a sudden dislocation in the Yingxiu-Beichuan fracture. This sudden release of energy is what creates the earthquake.

The rupture process occurred in complex stages over a period of time. The total rupture lasted close to 120 seconds. Most of the energy was released during the first 80 seconds of this period. The rupture began at Wenchuan and moved toward the northeast. It traveled at an average speed of 5 kilometers per second. The total length of the rupture was approximately 240 kilometers.

Scientists like Yuji Yagi noted that the Longmenshan Fault tore in two distinct sections. The first section ripped by about 6.5 meters. This was followed by a second section that sheared by 3.5 meters. This multi-stage process helped release the massive amount of energy stored in the fault.

This earthquake triggered a staggering number of geohazards. Geohazards are natural dangers caused by geological events. The shaking caused approximately 200,000 landslides to occur across the region.

It also created more than 800 quake lakes. These lakes form when landslides block the flow of rivers. These secondary disasters were extremely dangerous. Experts believe these geohazards were responsible for at least one third of the total death toll. As of July 2008, 374,176 people were reported injured. Additionally, 18,222 people were listed as missing. The earthquake left at least 4.8 million people homeless, though some estimates suggest as many as 11 million.

This event was the fourth deadliest natural disaster of its decade. The economic loss was calculated at 845.1 billion yuan, which is about US$130 billion.

In the aftermath, the region faced ongoing instability. Strong aftershocks continued to hit the area for several months. Some of these aftershocks exceeded a magnitude of 6.0. Seismologist Tom Parsons warned in May 2008 that there was a high risk of major aftershocks. The intense shaking also caused significant damage to infrastructure.

Bridges, roads, and buildings were heavily impacted by the movement of the ground. This made rescue and relief efforts very difficult in the mountains.

To address the devastation, the Chinese government launched a massive rebuilding effort. On November 6, 2008, the central government announced a stimulus program. They planned to spend 1 trillion yuan over three years to rebuild the ravaged areas. This amount is approximately US$146.5 billion.
