Some shakes are very small. Others are very big. They can even move the sea to make a tsunami.

Earthquakes happen near cracks in the Earth. These cracks are called faults. Sometimes people cause them too. They can happen from mining or testing bombs.

Rocks can get stuck on a fault. This builds up stress. When the rocks break, the energy shoots out. This makes the ground shake.

One big shake happened in Chile. It was the largest ever measured.

Most earthquakes happen because of faults. A fault is a crack in the Earth's crust.

Sometimes, the sides of a fault get stuck. As the plates move, they build up stress. This is called elastic-rebound theory. The stress builds until the rocks break. When they break, the stored energy shoots out.

There are three main types of faults. Normal faults happen when the crust pulls apart. Reverse faults happen when the crust is pushed together. These can cause very large megathrust earthquakes. Strike-slip faults happen when rocks slide past each other sideways.

Earthquakes can be natural. They can also be caused by people. This can happen through mining or testing nuclear weapons. Some shakes are so big they move the sea. This can create a tsunami.

This shaking happens when energy is suddenly released in the lithosphere. This release creates seismic waves that travel through the ground. Some quakes are so weak that people cannot feel them at all. Other quakes are violent enough to throw people and objects into the air. These big events can damage cities and break important buildings.

A fault is a crack where rocks move. The elastic-rebound theory explains how these faults work. First, the sides of a fault get stuck on rough spots. As the tectonic plates move, they build up stored energy called elastic strain. This energy stays trapped until the stress becomes too great. Finally, the rock breaks and the plates suddenly slide. This sudden movement releases the stored energy as seismic waves.

There are three main types of faults. Normal faults happen when the Earth's crust pulls apart. These usually produce smaller earthquakes. Reverse faults happen when the crust is pushed together. These can create massive megathrust earthquakes. These big quakes cause about 90% of the total seismic energy released worldwide.

The third type is the strike-slip fault. On these faults, the two sides slide horizontally past each other.

History shows us how powerful these events can be. The 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile was the largest ever recorded. It reached a magnitude of 9.5 on May 22, 1960.

In 1976, a huge earthquake hit Tangshan, China. This event killed between 240,000 and 655,000 people. Another very old event was the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake in China. It killed more than 100,000 people in its area. These numbers show why studying earthquakes is so important.

Earthquakes can cause many different things to happen. Large shakes can make the ground act like liquid, which is called soil liquefaction. If a quake happens under the ocean, it can move the seabed. This movement can create a tsunami that travels across the sea.

Earthquakes can also trigger landslides. While most quakes are natural, humans can cause them too. Activities like mining, fracking, or testing nuclear weapons can trigger shakes. Interestingly, these shaking events are not unique to Earth. Scientists have seen marsquakes on Mars and moonquakes on the Moon.
