What does a thunderstorm need?

Reading level 4 of 5 · FluentChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

Thunderstorms involve interacting updrafts, downdrafts, precipitation and electrical charging. The three-ingredient model isolates conditions supporting deep convection while omitting their detailed evolution. Wind shear can help organize some severe storms, but it is not interchangeable with moisture, instability or lift. No switch combination guarantees lightning or damaging weather.

Word help
Instability

Conditions that allow a displaced air parcel to continue rising.

Lift

A process that starts moving air upward.

Condensation

Water vapour becoming liquid droplets.

Qualitative parcel-and-cloud schematic, not a forecast or numerical atmospheric sounding.

What to look for
  • Remove lift while keeping moisture.
  • Compare stable with unstable surroundings.
  • Separate cloud formation from a storm guarantee.
Explain what you noticed

A humid afternoon has unstable air, but nothing lifts parcels past a stable layer. Is a thunderstorm certain?

Keep this idea: Moisture, instability and lift work together; one ingredient alone is insufficient.
