What does a thunderstorm need?

Reading level 2 of 5 · DevelopingChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

Lift can come from a front, a mountain or heating near the surface. If a lifted parcel remains warmer and less dense than the surrounding air, it can continue upward. Moisture supplies water for cloud formation. Dry air or stable surroundings can interrupt this simple storm-building picture.

Word help
Instability

Conditions that allow a displaced air parcel to continue rising.

Lift

A process that starts moving air upward.

Condensation

Water vapour becoming liquid droplets.

Qualitative parcel-and-cloud schematic, not a forecast or numerical atmospheric sounding.

What to look for
  • Remove lift while keeping moisture.
  • Compare stable with unstable surroundings.
  • Separate cloud formation from a storm guarantee.
Explain what you noticed

A humid afternoon has unstable air, but nothing lifts parcels past a stable layer. Is a thunderstorm certain?

Keep this idea: Moisture, instability and lift work together; one ingredient alone is insufficient.
