Which materials complete an electrical path?

Reading level 2 of 5 · DevelopingChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

A conductor can provide a path for moving charge. An insulator makes that movement much harder under the same conditions. Copper and aluminium are useful conductor examples, while dry plastic is an insulator example. Real materials are not simply magic on-or-off switches: moisture, temperature, size and voltage can change how much current passes.

Word help
conductor

A material that allows charge to move relatively easily.

insulator

A material that strongly resists charge movement under the comparison conditions.

Qualitative virtual sample comparison at fixed geometry; no household electrical testing.

What to look for
  • Graphite is a conducting nonmetal
  • Dry plastic resists current
  • Appearance alone is not the test
Explain what you noticed

A wire has a copper core inside a dry-plastic jacket. Which part provides the main conducting path?
