Zygentoma

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Zygentoma is a special group of insects. They include silverfish and firebrats. There are about 550 known species in this group. These insects are very old. They lived before insects even had wings. This makes them one of the most primitive living lineages of insects.

Most Zygentoma have very interesting bodies. They are often flat and shaped like an oval. Many species have shiny scales on their bodies. These scales give them a silvery glitter. Because of this, their movement looks like fish swimming through water. They also have three long, tail-like filaments on their back end. Two are called cerci and the middle one is an epiproct.

Scientists have studied these insects for a long time. The name Zygentoma was given by Börner in 1904. The name comes from Greek words. It means "yoke" and "insects." People used to think they were a suborder of Thysanura. Now, scientists know they are their own independent order. This change happened because researchers found new ways to look at insect history.

Zygentoma can live in many different places. Some live in dark and moist spots like caves. Some species live inside ant or termite nests. In homes, they eat things like paper and starch. They also eat cereals and dried meats. Some species do not even have eyes. They live in caves where it is very dark.

These tiny insects might help us in the future. They eat lignocellulose, which is found in wood. Their guts act like natural bioreactors. This means they break down cellulose using special processes. Scientists are studying them to help make biofuel. Biofuel is a type of power made from organic things. This could help us find new ways to make energy.
