A vigilante is someone who takes action to protect others when official authorities fail. Zorro operates in the Pueblo de Los Ángeles within Alta California. He fights against corrupt, tyrannical officials and various villains. His mission is to defend commoners and Indigenous peoples from oppression. Because of his fox-like cunning and charm, the townspeople call him "El Zorro."

To maintain his secret identity, Zorro uses a specific set of skills and tools. He is a master acrobat and an expert with many different weapons. His most frequent weapon is the rapier, which is a thin sword. He often uses this blade to carve a large "Z" on his defeated foes. This act serves as a way to "sign his work."

He also uses a bullwhip, which he can use like a gymnastic tool to swing between city roofs. Additionally, Zorro is a highly skilled horseman. He rides a jet-black horse named Tornado.

Zorro's appearance is defined by a very specific visual motif. He typically wears an all-black costume that includes a flowing Spanish cloak. His headwear is a Cordovan hat, also known as a sombrero cordobés. A black mask covers the upper half of his face.

In some versions, the mask is a two-piece set consisting of a bandana and a blindfold-type fabric. In other versions, it is a one-piece mask or even a rounded domino mask. His first appearance in 1919 featured a purple cloak and a black cloth veil mask.

The character's true identity is Don Diego de la Vega. He is a young Californio man and the only son of Don Alejandro de la Vega. Don Alejandro is the wealthiest landowner in California. Diego learned his advanced swordsmanship while studying at a university in Spain. He returned to California because his father summoned him home. At that time, California had fallen under an oppressive dictator.

To hide his true nature, Diego pretends to be a coward and a fop. A fop is a man who appears to care only about fashion and trivial things. He lives in a vast hacienda, which is a large estate. This estate contains secret passages and tunnels that lead to a hidden cave. This cave serves as Zorro's headquarters and a hiding place for Tornado.

Zorro was created by the American pulp writer Johnston McCulley. He first introduced the character in the 1919 novel, *The Curse of Capistrano*. This novel was originally intended to be a standalone story. However, the character became an enormous success. The novel eventually sold more than 50 million copies. This makes it one of the best-selling books in history.

Following the success of the 1920 film *The Mark of Zorro*, McCulley wrote many more stories. He produced a total of five serialized stories and 57 short stories over four decades. The final short story was published posthumously in 1959.

The character has appeared in a vast amount of media over the last century. There have been more than 40 films featuring Zorro. Notable film versions include the 1920 classic and a 1940 version starring Tyrone Power.

Beyond film and television, Zorro exists in comic books, radio dramas, stage productions, and video games.

Zorro is historically significant as a precursor to the modern superhero. He was one of the earliest examples of a fictional masked avenger with a double identity. This specific character archetype helped inspire many later heroes in American comic books. For example, characters like Batman and the Lone Ranger draw very close parallels to Zorro. His legacy continues through various media and new stories written by different authors.
