Zork is a famous text adventure game.

It is a type of interactive fiction where words tell the story. Instead of seeing characters move on a screen, you read descriptions. You explore the ruins of the Great Underground Empire to find treasure. The game acts like a narrator or a guide. It tells you where you are and what happens next. This makes the player feel like they are part of a living story.

Playing the game requires typing commands in natural language. You might type "get lamp" or "north" to move around. You can even use long phrases like "put the lamp and sword in the case." The game uses a special program called a parser to understand you. If you make a mistake, the narrator might respond with a sarcastic tone. You must solve many puzzles to move through the hundreds of locations. Some puzzles have more than one way to win. For example, you can stop loud noises by emptying a dam or by shouting "echo."

Groups of developers at MIT began working on Zork in May 1977. Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling were the creators. They wanted to make a better game than Colossal Cave Adventure. Their goal was to understand much more complicated sentences. They used a large computer called a PDP-10 mainframe. The name "Zork" was actually a term for a program still being made. Eventually, they formed a company called Infocom to sell the game.

Zork became a huge success for the new company Infocom. The first episode sold over 38,000 copies in 1982. By 1984, that number grew to about 150,000 copies. In total, the three main episodes sold over 680,000 copies by 1986. The game was split into three parts: Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III. In Zork I, you look for 20 treasures to win. Zork II adds magic spells, like a spell to make you glow. Zork III includes a timed earthquake that changes the world after 130 moves.

This game changed how people thought about digital stories. It helped start the adventure game genre that we know today. It also influenced modern games like MUDs and online role-playing games. In 2007, the Library of Congress recognized its importance. They named Zork one of the ten most important video games in history. It remains a foundational piece of computer history.
