The zodiac is a belt-shaped region in the sky.

It follows the ecliptic. The ecliptic is the path the Sun seems to take each year. The Moon and bright planets also move along this path.

People divide this belt into twelve equal parts. We call these parts signs. Each sign covers 30 degrees of the sky. The name zodiac comes from a Greek word for "little animals." This is because many signs use animals for names.

Examples include Leo the lion or Cancer the crab.

Babylonian astronomers created this system a long time ago. They used it to track stars and the time of year. Later, Greek and Roman people used these same ideas. Even the Hindu zodiac uses similar animal symbols.

Today, scientists still use this system. It is called an ecliptic coordinate system. This helps them track objects in our solar system. The signs do not match the star patterns perfectly anymore. This is because of a slow shift called precession. This shift moves the point where spring begins.
