They call themselves the Bën, which means \"People of the clouds.\" This name comes from the words \"Bën\" for people and \"Za\" for cloud. Most Zapotec people live in the southern state of Oaxaca. However, many communities also exist in neighboring states. Today, the population is estimated between 400,000 and 650,000 people. Many of these individuals are monolingual, meaning they speak only one of the Native Zapotec languages or dialects. Over several decades, many people of Zapotec ancestry have emigrated to the United States. They maintain strong social organizations in California, specifically in Los Angeles and the Central Valley.\n\nZapotec society is divided into four distinct geographic groups. The first group lives in the southern Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The second group resides in the northern mountains of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca. The third group is the southern Zapotec, who live in the Sierra Sur mountains. Finally, the Central Valley Zapotec live in and around the Valley of Oaxaca. These groups share a common heritage but are separated by the diverse landscape of the region. The Zapotecan language group is very complex. It includes over 60 different variants, as well as the closely related Chatino language. One major variant is Isthmus Zapotec, spoken on the Pacific coastal plain.\n\nThe history of the Zapotec civilization is tied to the development of Mesoamerica. Scholars agree that they inhabited the Central Valley of Oaxaca as early as 500 to 300 BCE. This era is known as the Monte Alban I period. Archaeological evidence at the site of Monte Alban suggests settlements existed as far back as 1150 BCE.
