It sits in the Huanghuai Plain, a large area of relatively flat land. To its west and north, it borders Jining. To the east, it neighbors Linyi. The province of Jiangsu lies to its south. Since January 2019, Zaozhuang has been the smallest prefecture-level city in Shandong. This change happened after the Laiwu prefecture was incorporated into Jinan. The city is a major hub for both history and modern industry.

The physical landscape of Zaozhuang is quite varied. The terrain is high in the north and low in the south. It is also low in both the east and the west. This creates a slope that leans from the northeast toward the southwest. Hills make up 54.6% of the total area. Plains cover 26.6%, while depressions account for the remaining 18.8%. This mix of landforms includes low mountains, hills, piedmont plains, and floodplains.

Elevation changes significantly across the region. The highest point is a mountain in the northern Shanting District. It reaches 620 meters above sea level. Other mountains, such as Lianqing and Baoji, rise over 500 meters. The western lakeside and coastal zones are much lower. These flat areas sit between 30 and 40 meters high. The absolute minimum elevation in the city is 24.5 meters. The climate is a mid-latitude warm temperate monsoon continental type. This means the city experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are long, hot, and humid. Winters are cold and dry. Spring and autumn are short and cool.

Human history in Zaozhuang stretches back thousands of years. Archaeologists found evidence of Neolithic era activities in the region. The local culture has evolved through several distinct stages. It began as an ancestor culture 7,300 years ago. This grew into a city-state culture 4,300 years ago. Later, it became a canal culture 2,700 years ago. Finally, it transitioned into an industrial culture about 130 years ago.

During the Xia Dynasty, the region was divided into different kingdoms. The south was the Kingdom of Zu, while the north held the kingdoms of Teng and Xue.

The Jinghang Canal has played a vital role in the city's development. The Zaozhuang section of this canal was excavated in 1604. It stretches for 93.9 kilometers from Xiazhen Lijiagang to Zhangzhou. The canal flows through Taierzhuang, Yucheng, Xuecheng, and Tengzhou. It enters the Yellow River estuary, using the Weihe River as a water source. For centuries, the canal helped move materials and people between northern and southern China. This movement encouraged cultural exchange and economic prosperity. Taierzhuang became a famous "lunan town" because of this trade. It is known for blending northern and southern cultures.

Zaozhuang also has a significant military and industrial history. In 1938, the city was the site of the Battle of Taierzhuang. This was a major event during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Under the leadership of Li Zongren, Chinese forces achieved a large-scale victory there. The city also has a deep connection to coal mining. Villagers began digging coal pits as early as the Ming dynasty. By the 1980s, Zaozhuang supplied 50% of the coal for the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region.

Modern Zaozhuang is a leader in new technology. It has become a major base for the lithium battery industry. Because of this, it is called the "Lithium Battery Capital in Northern China." The city is also well-connected by modern transport. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway stops at Zaozhuang and Zaozhuang West. The city has also invested in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems. As of 2021, the BRT system had 10 lines and 16 transfer lines. It has transported 390 million passengers so far.
