Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania. It joined with Tanganyika in 1964 to form this country.

Many people call these islands the "Spice Islands."

This is because growing spices is a main way people earn money. Farmers grow many different things like cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. They also produce coconut and black pepper. The islands also produce raffia. The ocean is just as important for the local economy. The marine ecosystem helps with fishing and seaweed farming.

By the 6th century, people lived in settled farming and fishing communities. In the 10th century, Zanzibar became a major Swahili trading town. Over hundreds of years, the way people built houses changed. They started with timber and mud. Later, they used coral and stone to build stronger homes.
